LINER NOTES;
The famous Badge Holders show. Immortalized on the legendary double vinyl set titled For Badge Holders Only Part 1 & 2, and issued on Dragonfly label back in the early 1980s, this is one of the band's most outstanding performances they ever did. Bonham is explosive, Jonesy is in superb form as always, and this might just be Page’s and Plant’s best show of the entire LA 1977 run, if not the whole tour. Jimmy's soloing is out of this world on just about every song, and Robert's vocals are very strong and powerful. If anyone ever claims that Page and Plant lost their abilities in 1973 and were never able to recapture the magic, this is a great gig to play to prove them wrong. It begins with a brief soundcheck before as the band went to the stage. Very suddenly, after a hurricane The Song Remains The Same, they stop for a while just to wait for Jimmy, who broke a guitar strap. He had to finish playing the song sitting on the drum riser, losing the momentum. Sick Again and Nobody’s Fault But Mine are possibly the best versions ever, with all four members of the band turning in stellar performances. Over The Hills And Far Away has Page playing a very rapid and fluid guitar solo, and Since I've Been Loving You features an outstanding soloing from him that builds a climax towards the end. No Quarter from this show is cited by many as the greatest ever, featuring 30-minutes of amazing interplay and jamming between Jimmy, Jonesy, and Bonzo, before an epic climax at the end. Ten Years Gone is powerful and mellow at the same time, one may wonder why they didn't play more songs like this. The acoustic set is simply gorgeous and carried along by Plant’s running joke about the badge holders, referring to the band's entourage and their groupies. It starts with a misty The Battle Of Evermore, delicate and subtle Going To California (where you can hear a great duel between the guitar and mandolin), and a groovy combo of Black Country Woman and Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp that shakes the building. The meandering, Eastern-like melodies of White Summer and Black Mountain Side leads to a bombastic Kashmir (where Jones is lost apparently at some point, missing a cue until they all get it together again), after which they changed the program, and performed an unexpected heavy version of Trampled Underfoot, where Jimmy's guitar cuts out during the second verse and goes inaudible for some time after. It was that time when a drunk Keith Moon joined them on stage, and while Bonham starts playing his drum solo, he introduced him in some uncensored words. The experimental Guitar Solo features a bit of The Star Spangled Banner before as Page starts his haunting violin bow solo, and a ferocious Achilles Last Stand finds them all firing on all cylinders for one more time. The very emotional Stairway To Heaven with its spectacular, long guitar solo played over the grand piano marks the end of the main set, but don't think it's over, as there are more surprises here! It's nothing else than Keith Moon, who joined the band yet again to jam on Whole Lotta Love and Rock and Roll played as the encores. Speaking overall, the whole show has the feeling of a wild party and the playing is a tad more loose than anywhere else.
We're also enough fortunate to have no less than five individual audience recordings capturing the whole show in a variety of lengths and qualities, of which two tapes are among the best sounding ones ever made. The legendary tape #1 aka For Badge Holders Only source, known for years from two double vinyl sets, is now available in its entirety, sharing excellent quality and missing only a small chunk of music and some small banter here and there. The tape #2 is probably the best known of all available recordings we have for this date so far, as it was taped by the great late Mike Millard in an exquisite quality. Because he had experienced some serious issues with his equipment that night, not every song is achieved (in fact, he misses the first four songs as he forgot to press record, and managed to make some unexpected 'ins' and 'outs' in many places because of issues involving the pause button). The tape #3 is known as to be a Carl Gabe recording. It shares just an average quality, and features almost complete show, with some small cuts and edits in few places. The tape #4 is Barry Goldberg recording, and having a very good quality, it shares also almost complete show, with just some small cuts too. The last available source is tape #5, which is a very fragmentary, rather poorly sounding recording of an unknown origin. There's also a fragmentary soundboard recording featuring almost complete Page's Guitar Solo that was leaked from someone, who received this from a Showco employee, who obtained his copy from Page himself back in 1979 while preparing a laser setup for Knebworth shows, but that's a completely different story.
This set consists of three individual contents, and representing this show in three different perspectives in its most definitive versions ever, and in the best quality possible. The first three discs are dedicated to Jon Wizardo recording solely, without any edits and mastering. Pure and raw, you're going through this tape as it has been recorded back in the day. The next three discs are collecting a source merge between Jon Wizardo tape (which is a basic source for this merge), and Mike Millard, Barry Goldberg and Carl Gabe tapes used as fillers when needed. This content has been carefully edited and mastered. The last three discs are dedicated to another source merge, this time with Mike Millard tape as primary source, and with Jon Wizardo, Barry Goldberg and Carl Gabe tapes as fillers. This is also edited and remastered version, but with a different source mix.
So have a sit, take some relax, and enjoy one of the best Led Zeppelin shows ever.
If you're reckoning yourself as a true Badge Holder, you cannot miss this set!
